Abdus Salam — From Jhang to the Nobel Prize 🇵🇰 In 1926, Abdus Salam was born in Jhang. At 14, he achieved the highest marks ever recorded in the University of Punjab’s matriculation exam. When he returned from Lahore, the whole town celebrated him. His brilliance took him from Government College Lahore to Cambridge, where he became a leading theoretical physicist. Returning to Pakistan in 1951, Salam wanted to build a world-class scientific community. But Pakistan lacked the research environment, libraries and scientific community he needed, so he eventually returned to Britain. Yet he never left Pakistan behind. He served on the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, was Chief Scientific Adviser to the President (1961–1974), and chaired SUPARCO in its early years. In 1979, he became the first Pakistani to win the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on electroweak theory. At the Nobel ceremony, he proudly wore a black sherwani, white shalwar, khussa and traditional pagri—carrying his homeland onto the world's greatest scientific stage. He also founded the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, helping scientists from developing countries pursue research. His story is more than a Nobel Prize. He left Pakistan to pursue science—but spent his life helping make science possible for others. Jhang → Lahore → Cambridge → Stockholm. 🇵🇰 He reached the world's highest scientific stage without forgetting where he came from. #AbdusSalam #Pakistan #PakistanHistory #Science#DidYouKnow
