Think about it for a second—an escalator is basically a staircase that decided walking was too much effort, so humanity built a giant metal staircase that moves itself while you stand there doing absolutely nothing. And the funniest part is that everyone has silently agreed on the rules. You get on, you stand on one side, you stare into the distance, and you pretend the person three steps behind you doesn’t exist. If someone stands on the wrong side, there’s instantly this weird social tension where nobody says anything, but everyone knows they’ve committed a crime. Then there’s the eternal debate of whether you should walk up the escalator or just stand there. Like, you’re already being transported upward by a machine—why are you now speedrunning the staircase? But then again, if everyone stood still, you’d have a perfectly functioning human conveyor belt where nobody moves their legs. And somehow escalators are also terrifying when you actually think about the mechanics. There’s a bunch of massive metal steps constantly disappearing underneath the floor and reappearing at the other end, yet we all casually put our shoes near the gaps and trust the machine with our entire existence. Imagine explaining that to someone from 500 years ago: “Yeah, we have a staircase that eats itself every few seconds, but don’t worry, it’s completely safe.” And lifts are even stranger because we’ve somehow accepted that standing inside a tiny metal room while it rapidly moves vertically through a building is normal. Humans really looked at stairs and thought, “What if stairs, but automatic?” Then looked at ladders and thought, “What if ladder, but vertical elevator?” Then looked at walking and thought, “Actually, let’s build roads specifically so tiny metal boxes can carry us around at terrifying speeds.” And now we’re at the point where someone can spend ten minutes looking for their phone while literally holding it in their hand, which might genuinely be the peak of human technological achievement or smth #akainu #sabo #onepieceslander #agendapiece #agenda
