The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Shown here at the most iconic cross in Chicagoland - Saint Peter’s in the Loop AKA The Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-creating Cross Also known as the Triumph of the Cross, Feast of the Cross, Holy Cross Day, Holy Rood Day, Roodmas, and Crouchmas. Celebrated across the Christian Churches, mostly on September 14, but September 13 by the East Syriac Church and September 27 by Julian Calendar Christians. Celebrates the True Cross being found by Saint Helena; the dedication of churches built by Emperor Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the elevation of the True Cross at Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. In Chicagoland, we have many churches named after the Cross. Catholic Churches in Back of the Yards, Chicago; Batavia, Deerfield, and Joliet; a friary in Edgewater; Lutheran churches in Bridgeport and in Alsip; and a Greek Orthodox church in Justice, IL. There’s also a Catholic cemetery in Calumet City, while Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is in Alsip. I’ve only made it to Holy Cross in Deerfield and to Holy Sepulchre where most my relations are bureid. The Congregation of Holy Cross (CSC), the religious order who operate the University of Notre Dame, are named after Holy Cross (incidentally because the neighborhood of Le Mans they were founded in is named Sainte-Croix in France - meaning Holy Cross). I think of Notre Dame and South Bend basically as Chicagoland, but Holy Cross priests and brothers also work closer by, overseeing Holy Trinity High School in West Town (they originally oversaw the Holy Trinity Polish Mission) and Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, IL.
