@politicalparalysi: Councils get a core grant, but a lot of the money for actual projects works differently. They bid for it, compete against other towns, and most of them lose. Durham spent £1.2m on bids and the government changed the scoring rules after they'd gone in. #UKPolitics #Austerity #Funding #Decline #PoliticalParalysis
Where we live individual councillors each have an annual budget of £10,000 to spend in their ward on deserving causes. It is not a silver bullet but it can make a real difference.

surely it's time they adopted ai to create and manage the bids, and stop wasting money paying staff to chase money.

This is crucial information that should be taught in schools. We don’t know how we’re governed so we assume a lot about the very convoluted system that refuses to improve

Thank you for explaining this complete waste of time and effort. And it’s all in the name of an ideological, almost religious, fixation on what is laughably called ‘competition’ .

Interesting. But it just seems madness that they’re paying that much to get turned down. 🤯

Same for schools. For any significant repairs or replacements they have to bid. Up to 90% are often rejected due to the size of the pot available, meaning huge wastage of resource bidding for work which won’t likely ever get done! Worse - external companies know this and offer to support or even write your bids for you, at zero cost. But of course those companies don’t provide this service for free - the cost then forms part of their bid - if they support enough bids they know they’ll win a proportion of them, and that winning bid has enough fees to cover all of the ones they did not win - and that means their ‘free’ service gets charged to taxpayers as part of the successful bids funded…
