A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked: “Who among the people has the greatest right to my good companionship and kind treatment?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Your mother.” The man asked: “Then who?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Your mother.” The man asked again: “Then who?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Your mother.” The man asked: “Then who?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Then your father.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim. ⸻ What Scholars Explain About This Hadith Scholars explain that this Hadith shows the special and greater right of the mother to kindness, good treatment, service, and companionship. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the mother three times before mentioning the father. This is because the mother experiences great hardships for her child: * She carries the child during pregnancy. * She suffers the pain of childbirth. * She breastfeeds and cares for the child. * She often stays awake, worries, and sacrifices for the child’s upbringing. Allah ﷻ says: “His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship.” Therefore, scholars say that the mother deserves a particularly high level of kindness, patience, service, respect, and good companionship. Does this mean the father has no right? No. The father also has a عظیم (great) right over his children. Scholars explain that the Hadith does not mean the father is unimportant. Rather, it shows that in matters of good companionship and daily kindness, the mother has a greater share because of her additional sacrifices and hardships.
