The company had suffered a major setback that week, a project she had spent months building had fallen apart, and for the first time in years, she had no idea what she was supposed to do next. Jennie looked down at her hands. “I worked so hard for this, Lisa. I thought I had everything figured out. The plan, the people, the future…” She swallowed. “And now it feels like I don’t even know where I’m going.” Lisa leaned back against the couch. “Then don’t figure it out tonight.” Jennie looked at her. “What?” “You don’t have to know where you’re going every second.” “I should.” “Why?” “Because I’m supposed to be the one who knows what to do.” Lisa shook her head. “No.” Jennie frowned. “No?” “No. You’re supposed to be a person.” That made Jennie laugh quietly. “You make it sound so easy.” “It isn’t.” Lisa reached for Jennie’s hand. “But you don’t have to carry everything alone.” Jennie stared at their hands. “What if I make the wrong decision?” “Then we’ll deal with it.” “What if I fail?” “Then we’ll start again.” “What if I don’t know how to start again?” Lisa squeezed her hand. “Then I’ll sit beside you until you figure it out.” Jennie’s eyes softened. “You always say things like that.” “Because you always forget.” “Forget what?” “That you’re not alone.” The rain continued tapping against the windows. Jennie leaned her head against Lisa’s shoulder. For a while, neither of them spoke. Then Lisa whispered, “Do you know what a co-pilot does?” Jennie smiled faintly. “Helps the pilot fly?” “Exactly.” “And?” “They don’t necessarily control the plane.” Jennie lifted her head. “Then what’s their job?” Lisa looked at her. “To stay.” Jennie became quiet. “To help when things get difficult. To watch the instruments when the pilot is tired. To remind them where they’re going when they lose their way.” Jennie’s eyes stayed on hers. “And when the pilot makes a mistake?” Lisa smiled. “The co-pilot doesn’t jump out of the plane.” Jennie laughed. “That would be extremely unhelpful.” “Exactly.” Lisa gently bumped her shoulder against Jennie’s. “They stay.” Jennie looked down. “You know, sometimes I think you’re the only person who isn’t afraid of seeing me fail.” “I am afraid.” Jennie looked surprised. “You are?” “Of course.” “Then why don’t you leave?” Lisa’s expression softened. “Because being afraid isn’t the same as giving up.” Jennie didn’t answer. Lisa continued. “I don’t love you only when you’re confident. I don’t stay only when everything is going perfectly.” She reached up and gently fixed a strand of Jennie’s hair. “I stay when you’re confused. I stay when you’re tired. I stay when you don’t have an answer.” Jennie’s eyes became glassy. “And when I’m difficult?” Lisa smiled. “Especially then.” Jennie laughed through her tears. “That’s a terrible decision.” “Probably.” “You’re crazy.” “Probably.” “You could choose someone easier.” “I don’t want easier.” Jennie stared at her. “What do you want?” Lisa answered without hesitation. “You.” The room fell quiet again.
