He also gave him the lead in a film developed for Gibson himself. Jon Favreau spent months arguing with Marvel to cast him as Iron Man and would not drop it. Then the one that does not fit the pattern. The head of Marvel Studios owed Downey nothing. He told his own board they were wrong and put the future of the whole company on an actor everyone else called a risk. None of the three were family.
