I remember vividly when my mom told me and my siblings were “expensive” so we’d have to get a job when we turned 16. Then we did get jobs she got mad that she had to take us to and from work, then made us pay HER GAS MONEY for it. Then she started charging us rent as soon as we turned 18. At that time I was working a minimum wage job and had a car note that SHE made me get because she was “tired of driving us.” And once we told her that we couldn’t afford our own bills plus hers, she caught an attitude and threatened homelessness above us. It’s like no matter what we did, she was always upset about something and it was always our fault 🥹

As the mother of a 19 year old. I say this often, people think I am and stupid and spoiling my child because she does not have to pay bills. I mean the amount of times I had this conversation gets people in an uproar by me telling them my child doesn’t pay bills at 19.

They are teaching them that adulthood is all doom and gloom and drudgery, just work and pay bills. And that probably is the parents’ reality. They don’t have a real plan set up for themselves or their kids, just keep the kids alive until they graduate high school, and then it’s “you’re grown now, figure it out.” Also, the economy has changed so much, but the parents didn’t do anything to try to increase their income. They can’t afford their kids

My partner’s parents charged him $400 a month while we were saving to move out 😭 In THIS economy?? Some parents really see their adult kids struggling and think “you know what they need? Another bill!”
