@clashmagazine: 17 years ago today, Joy Orbison released his debut single, “Hyph Mngo”. Before its official release, “Hyph Mngo” had already begun circulating through the scene, appearing in a Ben UFO mix for Fabric in May and on Scuba’s Rinse FM show the following month. White labels circulated throughout the summer before the track was officially released via Hotflush Recordings on 14th September. Built around a distorted Janet Jackson vocal sample, “Hyph Mngo” captured a new direction emerging in UK electronic music, and the track would go on to become an anthem of the loosely defined post-dubstep era. Reflecting on the track years later, O’Grady wrote: “[I] was 21 when [‘Hyph Mngo’] came out. I can honestly say I had no idea that would be the start of a ‘career’ that even now I still feel in the early stages of.” “I had mucked about on FruityLoops and Cubase for years,” he continued. “But I think this was the first time I had a bit of a direction or sound.
