We need to talk about this, because far too many people continue to fall back on that tired, lazy “it’s just jealousy” narrative, when that’s not the case at all. If it were really about envy, we would be angry at seeing any beautiful woman who perfectly fits beauty standards, like Scarlett Johansson or Sofía Vergara. Yet no one goes after them, because the problem isn’t anyone’s body, it’s the constant objectification of women, which ultimately affects all of us. It is perfectly legitimate to feel angry and uncomfortable when watching Sydney Sweeney’s advertisement, because we grew up seeing women practically naked being used to sell gasoline, cars, tires, and absolutely everything else, solely to satisfy the male gaze. We had to fight tooth and nail to gain ground, demand laws, and finally be valued for what our bodies are capable of doing rather than for their appearance. Putting out an advertisement like this, which shows a complete disconnect from reality, and then brushing all of it off with a simple “it’s just sports, not politics,” is a real slap in the face, because sports are political. We had to deal with a lack of self-confidence, insecurities, harassment, and the pressure caused by hypersexualized uniforms, only to see someone come along with this kind of advertisement and bring us right back to square one. So the next time someone pulls out the “you’re just jealous” argument, remember one thing, we are not angry at her body, we are angry at the toxic message it conveys and at the way it harms all women in a fight for which we have literally risked our lives to move things forward.
