Try using bigger brushes! They force you to feel less attached to the tiny details and get that loose feeling you're going for. Also blur your references as an exercise

a dry fan brush will blend and blur your edges and get you closer to the look you’re going for 🫶

My full artistic history: I’ve been drawing my whole life, I’ve done one art-deco mural with latex paint, one iPad painting, (that I later printed) and I’ve attempted several horrendous watercolor landscapes! This summer has been my first attempt at realism portraits/oil painting :) but honestly credit my ability to be not-awful at this with doing makeup every day for the last 20 years
