Centuries before the modern U.S.–Mexico border existed, Indigenous civilizations flourished across what is now Mexico and the American Southwest. Later, Spanish and then Mexican communities established towns, ranches and settlements across places that today include California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Then came the Mexican-American War. And in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo changed sovereignty over an enormous territory. For some Mexican families already living there, they didn’t cross an international border to enter the United States—the political boundary and government changed around the communities where they lived. That’s why Mexican-American history cannot be explained simply as an immigration story. Some families have roots in the Southwest going back generations. Others came through later immigration. Both histories are real—but they are not the same history. So before asking someone, “Where are you REALLY from?” you might want to know the history beneath their feet. 📚 CHICANO FILES™ | EDUCATIONAL HISTORY Chicano Files™ shares educational stories based on historical records, primary sources, government archives, and reputable research.
