Ten years later, she became the first woman ever awarded the grandmaster title. In 2020, Netflix released The Queen's Gambit, about Beth Harmon, a made-up prodigy who beats the world's best men. Netflix says 62 million households watched it in four weeks. In the finale, set in 1968, a commentator name-drops the real Nona. He says she's the female world champion, and she "has never faced men." The book the show was based on got it right. It said she'd faced Russia's top grandmasters many times. Netflix changed the line. She asked them to correct it and apologize. According to her lawsuit, Netflix called the line "innocuous." So she sued, calling the line "grossly sexist and belittling." Netflix argued fiction didn't count. A federal judge disagreed, writing that Netflix's own evidence showed it knew the truth and chose the lie anyway. Netflix appealed, then settled in secret before a higher court could rule. Companies count on you never hearing stories like this. Many companies we pay every day have been sued, fined, or accused of far worse, and most people never find out. That's why we built the Conscious Spend app. It gives companies ethics grades, shows who really owns what you buy, helps you find better alternatives, and much more.
