@history_unleashed360: On August 16, 2021, amid the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, hundreds of desperate Afghan civilians surrounded an American Air Force C-17 Globemaster III on the tarmac, attempting to stop the aircraft from departing without them. Mistakenly believing they could cling to the exterior of the plane much like train surfers, most fell or jumped off just before takeoff, while others risked their lives airborne rather than face life under Taliban rule. Tragically, two people fell from the aircraft shortly after liftoff, and the remains of another individual were discovered trapped in the wheel well upon landing in Qatar. Of these victims, only 19-year-old Zaki Anwari, a player for Afghanistan’s national youth soccer team, was identified. The overall evacuation proved catastrophic, claiming the lives of over 170 Afghan civilians and 13 U.S. service members—comprising 11 Marines, a Navy corpsman, and an Army soldier—most of whom were killed during the August 26 Abbey Gate attack when ISIS-K detonated an improvised explosive device and fired into the crowd. #AfghanEvacuation #KabulAirport #C17Globemaster #reels #viral
