@history.hatched: On February 21, 1968, the Battle of Huế was entering its fourth week as U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese forces continued efforts to retake the city from North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces that had occupied much of Huế during the Tet Offensive. Fighting was not confined to the city itself. Military operations extended into surrounding villages and populated areas along the Perfume River and the approaches to Huế, as American and South Vietnamese forces moved through local communities while attempting to isolate and eliminate Communist positions. Within Huế, Marines fought intense urban combat south of the river, while South Vietnamese forces continued their assault on the Citadel north of the river. The prolonged fighting caused extensive destruction throughout the city and surrounding areas and displaced large numbers of civilians. Sources: William F. Nimmo and Cavender S.
