We spend so much of our lives trying to eliminate the parts we don’t like. We want happiness without sadness, success without failure, pleasure without pain, and light without darkness. But remove one side of the equation and the other loses its meaning. The shadow isn’t a mistake in the picture. It’s part of the picture. Darkness doesn’t mean your life is broken. Sadness doesn’t mean you’ve failed at being happy. Sometimes the contrast is precisely what allows you to recognize what you’re experiencing. You don’t appreciate the sunrise because you’ve never seen darkness. You appreciate it because you’ve known the night. This is one of the deeper lessons of consciousness: stop fighting the natural rhythm of existence. Life expands and contracts, rises and falls, begins and ends. Yin contains Yang, Yang contains Yin. The opposites aren’t separate worlds. They’re woven together into one experience. Maybe peace doesn’t come from choosing the light and rejecting the darkness.
