you share all of my exact thoughts on this book and it makes me feel so validated lollll. there’s so much that was wonderfully done and then so many times i thought (hoped!!) it would go one way and then seemed to wimp out and take the easy (and more boring) route :/

Loved this book! Horror was great and the atmosphere was so well done. Great review!

it felt like to me the author had spent so long with this book and these characters in her head that there were entire connections/relationships that she knew existed and lurked at the corners but she never showed it to outside readers. and there were so many loose ends that again i believe she thought she wrapped up but were not satisfying to a reader.

Yeah I liked this one but didn’t love it. I think as a film, I would really like it. As a book, I was just waiting for things to click. Ironically the only thing I really got from this book was the plot; I didn’t really understand the characters at all

Omg I literally said the same thing abt how it's horny but then weirdly sexless which confused me bc it didn't shy away from the gore/horror side of things. This author is 2 for 2 on three stars for me, good concepts but then don't quite pull it off. I'm not going to pick up milk teeth bc I fear it will be more of the same 😔

I loved the book on a sentence level and the narrator was very enjoyable to listen to so I had a really good time - until the book was over and I realized nothing had really happened and none of my questions had been answered 😭

this books should have been better than it was. unfortunately, it was boring and i'm still mad about it. sapphic medieval horror with mean, nasty, unreliable MCs is exactly up my alley, and yet...

my same thoughts. One of my friends read the author's other book The luminous dead and said that it was the same rhythm and scenes, beat for beat :/

I tried the starving saints twice and didn’t finish either time, which was so disappointing for me! Toxic, messy lesbians and cannibalism of some kind is usually an instant win for my book tastes and that one was such a miss. I did get an arc from NetGalley of her next book, Milkteeth, and enjoyed that one a LOT more so maybe try that one out?! If dark sapphic vampires with mommy issues sounds appealing to you 😭🖤

Medieval horror is such an intriguing concept!! Does anyone have any recommendations for other books that fit into this genre?

I didn’t “like” this or think it was overly strong as a novel, but I also haven’t stopped thinking about it in a year. It was just so weird and creepy and horny and off putting in a fun way

i LOVED tss but i can 100% agree with your criticisms on this. i wanted more of the lady and ser voyne’s weird relationships so bad 💔 loved those parts so much. it started losing a lot of momentum towards the end of me with the progression of phosyne, if that makes sense? it felt too shoved onto her

I ate this up and was happy to sneak around the castle with them but GOD they were just going to each others rooms all the time

Your comment about a play by play of nothing happening is the same way I felt about The Luminous Dead by her. Could have left out half of the repetitive cave exploring and I would have enjoyed it a lot more

this book annoyed me so bad because why was there like no world building? it is such a cool premise and the horror parts were well written but the rest fell flat for me :(

There were so many cool and interesting elements that were not explained or important at all that the ending felt disappointing because i was like but what about this, or this or anything else

apparently the author wrote this book non-chronologically ? like she would write lines and then have to go back to connect them back to what has happened before, which makes sense to me why it feels really disjointed

I did really like the exploration of devotion and power dynamics within relationships, from the king to the three main women, but it was still odd to me how it spent so much time running around, but then skipped through some of the horrific parts, like how did Phosyne go from I’m going to negotiate to disembowelling the king completely off page.

I felt almost exactly the same about this one! A book about characters going over to each others rooms is spot on lmao

Starling is such an interesting and weird author for me! I leave her books feeling very divided and enjoyment varies haha. But I do find myself thinking about her work even years later! I need to read more of her to flesh out how I feel! This was an interesting discussion of this book!
