@veganuary: Just kidding...🤪 Not sure what nutritional yeast is? We got you! 👇 Nutritional yeast, affectionately known as "nooch", is a deactivated yeast that comes in flake or powder form. It has a cheesy, nutty flavour that can elevate any dish. It contains protein and other essential nutrients and is packed with B vitamins, including vitamin B12, which brings us to one of the most frequently asked questions about plant-based eating: "How do you get vitamin B12?” Let's break it down. 👇 What is B12? Vitamin B12 is essential for producing blood and nerve cells, making DNA, and preventing anaemia. What foods contain B12? Vitamin B12 is present in animal products because animals such as cows, sheep and goats are given cobalt supplementation, and their gut bacteria then converts it into B12. Whilst pigs and chickens are given B12 supplements directly in their feed. For vegans, you can get B12 by eating yeast extract, nutritional yeast, breakfast cereals, bread and plant-based milks that are fortified with it, alongside a direct supplement to ensure you are getting a sufficient amount. By taking a supplement instead of getting B12 from animals, vegans are removing the middle man. How much B12 do we need? The UK recommends 1.5μg daily, while the US recommends 2.4μg. Our bodies can store B12 for up to four years, so it's best to keep stores topped up with a reliable supplement. What's your favourite way to use nutritional yeast?
