There’s something hilarious about having a friend who is barely older than you suddenly start speaking like they’ve lived through three wars and witnessed the rise and fall of entire civilizations. 😭 Like you’re 24 and they’re 26, but somehow they’re sitting across from you saying, “Listen, when you get to my age, you’ll understand,” as if they didn’t graduate high school approximately twenty minutes before you did. Yes unc, please continue. Tell me what life was like in the old days of 2024. 😭 But honestly, older friends—even when they’re only a couple years older—can sometimes give surprisingly useful advice because two years can actually contain a lot of life experience depending on what somebody has gone through. Maybe they’ve already experienced the breakup you’re currently dealing with, made the career mistake you’re considering making, lived alone for the first time, learned how to manage money better, or simply reached a stage of life you haven’t gotten to yet. Sometimes having somebody slightly ahead of you is even more helpful than getting advice from someone twenty years older because their experience is recent enough that they still remember exactly what your current stage felt like. They aren’t looking back through decades of hindsight; they were basically just there. Of course, being older doesn’t automatically make somebody wiser. Some people collect birthdays without collecting a single lesson from any of them. 😭 And advice should always be filtered through your own judgment because what worked for somebody else isn’t automatically right for your life. But there’s something nice about friendships where people can pass down what they’ve learned without making it feel like a lecture. Today your slightly older friend is giving you ancient wisdom about something they’ve already survived, and two years from now you’ll probably catch yourself giving the exact same speech to somebody younger. Then they’ll call you unc and you’ll suddenly understand that your transformation into an elder has been completed.
