@c5news: School dinners are set to undergo the biggest overhaul in a generation with “healthier, tastier” meals on the menu for millions of children across the country. Under the new measures designed to combat tooth decay and obesity, any permitted desserts must either contain, or be served alongside, fruit and fried food is banned. The changes to school food standards will see more fresh fruit and vegetables, fibre-rich foods and nutritious balanced meals that help children “stay focused, energised and ready to learn throughout the school day”, the government has said. Guidelines published by the Department for Education (DfE) will curb deep-fried products alongside sugary items including ice cream, waffles, and sweetened drinks. Limits will also be placed on foods heavy in salt and fat, such as sausages and pizzas. The food reforms follow changes aimed at giving families breathing space with the cost of living, including a cap on the number of branded school uniform items. Three million children from families receiving Universal Credit are now eligible for free school meals and thousands of free breakfast clubs are operating across the country, the government noted in its announcement. #5news #food #school
