@lukeflunder: Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires 2017. This is only the tenth release of Blanc des Millénaires in more than 40 years, and it has already been awarded a perfect 100 points by James Suckling. Made entirely from Chardonnay, it comes predominantly from the Côte des Blancs, including Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Vertus and, for the first time since 1983, Chouilly. That last point matters because 2017 was far from an easy year in Champagne. Frost, storms and hail caused problems across the region, but Chardonnay from the best sites performed remarkably well. The wine was laid down in 2018 and spent years ageing beneath Reims in Charles Heidsieck’s extraordinary 2,000-year-old chalk crayères before disgorgement in 2025. The result is a Champagne with real depth and texture, but still incredible freshness: citrus, white peach, toasted almond, brioche and that unmistakable chalky finish.
