This is nonsense. Dolphins could be way smarter than us for all we know. Dolphins are never going to control anything on Earth

We do not control the earth ONLY because we are the smartest. There are plenty of other reasons

I think “the smartest thing controls Earth” skips a whole layer. Intelligence alone doesn’t control anything; it has to have the means to express itself. Put human-level intelligence inside a turtle’s body and it’s still limited by the turtle. AI could influence the physical world indirectly through the internet, institutions, and human behavior. But the real threshold is when it can independently manipulate the physical world, acquire resources, repair or reproduce its machinery, and keep operating without human permission. Being smarter than us and being capable of controlling Earth are not the same thing. Intelligence is capacity. Control is intelligence connected to effective means.

Would like to hear from the actual engineers. Not the hype/sales CEOs. Engineers truly free to be honest about where we are.

Your premise is flawed. Humans don’t control earth. They control some things on earth, just as other species control some things, the weather controls some things, and the sun and moon control some things.

Why do you think humans control what happens on earth?

Humans don't control Earth. We just like to pretend we do, while we mess it up. There isn't even a coherent "us" to expect AI to align itself to. The idea that anything whatsoever could control the earth is deeply enbedded in Western hegemonic thinking.

the smartest people don't always win wars, the smartest people don't always become CEOs, the smartest people don't always become king. why would the smartest intelligence inherently determine what happens on earth.... intelligence is just one form of leverage. it doesn't negate all the others.

corporations are AI. a corporation is smarter than a person. corporations control the earth. it tracks imo.

Good, but Embedded Evaluators can be influenced, so how many are needed?

A computer is more capable than a human it doesn’t mean computers control earth. If A.I becomes a more capable computer it’s not a problem at all. If A.I gains actual intelligence though then this question is very valid.

regular ml algorithms have defined more of our future than llms. for example YouTube algorithms defined the entire last decade of content and internet culture. llms would just give the most popular answer to your problem or question

But how would “we” regulate what they do in other countries?

Saying we control bc we’re smarter is a bad assumption in the first place tho, it’s not just that we’re the smartest, we are also living

Pretty weak formulation tbh, but the rest is reasonable. Nothing intrinsic about that “because”, just two simultaneously true statements.

we don’t control what happens on earth bcuz we’re the smartest. 1) we don’t individually control hat happens on earth any more than ants or beavers do 2) the impact we have has little to do with how smart we are and more to do with our primal instincts such as mating, physical security, resource security, etc

You could argue that humans have a pretty limited impact on their destiny anyways as almost all progress societally is done by the top percentile of intellectuals businessmen and politicians

I currently agree with the formula, but it’s possible we just find out your formula is completely false when AI intelligence overtakes human intelligence.

Thanks for raising the topic. I will return to a few months back when you raised similar topics in a live. In it, I tried to warn that the trajectory forward is too risky, and this was despite the shadowy shady figures in the forms of government perpetuating is massive expansion. Ill reiterate with a refined argument--if there's a 10% chance of destruction and 90% chance of success and utopia, this risk remains too high. When we debated about the data centers, I proposed a moratorium because 1, this (above mentioned); and 2, environmental impacts; 3, obsolescence and resource depletion, make all of the path we have been on a huge risk to the continuity of civilization. The polycrisis existed before Ai. And overcoming the collection of crises then seemed insurmountable. Can we in good faith approach this and think that with "only" a ten percent risk to humanity, and considering the existential risks mankind faces already, that we should consciously carry on investing into this entire industry as we are, with or without easily expendable "embedded evaluators"? Thank you for your attention to this matter. -Doughboy

Have we tried this in any other industries, and if so, how did it go? These people would be paid with tax dollars and work for the government, correct? Would this present any barriers to entry into the industry for new companies?

Yeah not sure about this only bc the one CEO sounding the alarm and saying the need third party people to regulate it owns all the companies who would regulate them. Totally not a power play to take over AI.
