@lifeofpippa_: The Eurostar has pros and cons if you have a chronic illness but it’s still one of my favourite ways to travel… so come with me from London to Amsterdam! PROS: - You can keep your mobility aids with you at all times rather than having to check them into hold luggage. - You may be able to access discounts for companions and priority boarding (even if you don’t use mobility aids). - You have access to the lounge once you’re through security: most crucially, with all the cereal your heart may desire. - The wheelchair spaces onboard tend to be in smaller Plus or Premier carriages, which are often more peaceful than other carriages and also have easy access to a toilet. CONS: - There’s no options to transfer to a seat, so even if you’re ambulant, you’ll need to stay in your wheelchair for the whole journey. - Allergies and dietary requirements on-board can be very hit or miss in my experience, even if you communicate your requirements months in advance - always make sure you’re prepared for this and take *plenty* of safe snacks. - If you have assistance booked, you’ll need to turn up and check-in earlier than other passengers - usually the guidance is around 60-90 minutes before your train is set to depart. - You’re still very much relying on assistance and there’s always at least a small chance the ramp won’t turn up at your stop, though personally I’m much less concerned about this on the Eurostar then I am on other services because *most* of the time the destinations are vigilant and well-staffed. Definitely benefits and drawbacks to this mode of transport when you have a chronic illness, but being able to reach amazing destinations by train is something I’ll never take for granted!
