That’s why I now realise that I can’t understand any Brits when they try to speak to me and talk very quickly when they come to Spain; it’s the same for all Spaniards: no Spaniard can understand any Brit. They mumble, they slur their words and they mispronounce their own language; they’ve forced us to speak colloquial English and yet they expect a foreigner who’s learnt academic English to understand them when they can’t even be understood in their own country? Don’t be surprised that no Spaniard in Spain wants to speak to someone who speaks British English, because it’s impossible. Learn to speak slowly and pronounce words correctly; don’t speak quickly, because nobody in Spain will understand you. Even if you meet Spaniards who speak English well, they won’t understand you, because your accent is quite confusing for Spaniards.
