@drbeckyatgoodinside: If you feel like you're negotiating every single decision in your house lately, you are not alone. I used to think good parenting meant having an airtight explanation ready for every rule. What actually changed things in my house was something much simpler: fewer words, said with more certainty. There's nothing wrong with your kid for testing that. And there's nothing wrong with you if you're worn down enough to want to just give in. You just need a few sentences ready before you're standing in it, and that's exactly what I made this video for. Three sentences matter most: that the decision's already made, that your kid doesn't have to like it, and that you're allowed to stop talking about it for now. And if you want more support putting these into practice, the exact scripts and scenarios, not just the theory, my brand new boundaries program walks you through it. Enroll now and you'll also get into my live workshop with me on September 23, plus the replay. More info at the link in my bio.

Any advice for an adhd child who has very strong opinions/feelings and tends to stay stuck?

But what if your decision isn’t inherently the “right” one? What if your kids have a point? They never asked to be born, so shouldn’t you at least grant them the sovereignty to govern their own lives, regardless of the risk involved? “You don’t have to like it, and it’s happening anyway” implies that somehow you as the parent are in the right

I want to add that it's not always WHAT you say but HOW you say it. Tone conveys a lot and the tone she uses in these words examples is neutral and matter of fact instead of punitive or dismissive.

I think part of the issue here is that many of us grew up with parents that didn't care about our feelings at all, like ever, and made lots of decisions that impacted us very negatively. The over correction is an effort to make sure our kids feel loved and valued. I see what you're trying to say here (and I absolutely do impose rules and boundaries) but I think there's a balance of letting kids give their opinions about something, considering them and then maybe course correcting? Like there's a balance between allowing some autonomy with limits?

No! “I wasn’t asking you, I was telling you. Please go do it.”

My favorite phrase currently is “I’ve given you an answer.” Been consistently saying this over the past year & my kids might not like it but they don’t try to persuade me anymore the second they hear this.

We are big on “I’ve already answered that question”. My toddler is in her why phase, which is normally fine! But she has started asking “but why” over and over again when she doesn’t get her way. So after an explanation or two, I simply tell her that I’ve already answered that question.

As a teacher, I often say “you’ve asked, I’ve answered” when I get the same question asked hoping for a different answer. I’m sure they do this at home too!

I use these and people think I disregard my children's feelings 😅 they can feel, but now isn't the time, and it's already done.

I agree- warmth and limits is what we want for them, and for ourselves as well. We all deserve and need them.
