my last PC gave up all her levels on Artificer to become a Warlock so she could protect/save her twin sister (another PC), at the end of the campaign I had to watch her return home, along with all our new friends, while I was basically stuck at the foot of my patron we all cried, but her and I SOBBED

Dm did this with an NPC party member, it sort of became a boss bottle of her metaphorically falling into darkness and every party member fighting shadow creatures and rolling checks to get her back.

My Rogue in one of the campaigns I play lost his family as a kid. I'm the only one without a "family" to return to. The Druid has her moms, our Cleric has his family, our Monk has his monastery, our Bard has a girlfriend, and our Paladin has a wife.
