Hotwiring works by bypassing a car’s ignition system to start the engine without using a key. In older vehicles, the ignition switch simply connects electrical circuits that power the dashboard and send current to the starter motor, so manually linking those wires can turn the engine over. Modern cars are much more secure, using immobilizers and coded signals between the key and the engine control unit, which prevents the engine from starting even if the wiring is accessed. This is why hotwiring is mostly ineffective today and mainly serves as an example of how vehicle security has evolved over time.
