I am a social worker a pediatric diagnostic clinic. One day, I heard some crying and little feet running around the corner. I paused and walked towards it. It was the sweetest little boy, who did NOT want to get his hearing tested…which I don’t blame him. It’s scary sometimes and they put stuff in your ears. We ended up diagnosing him with level 3 ASD and he had no language to communicate. Anyway, the second he locked eyes on me, he reaches out for me and still crying. I pick him up and he holds on to me. I was able to help him transition into the audiology booth. He wouldn’t let go of me. And I finally decided to sit in the booth with him to help ease his anxiety of being in the booth. He turns around in my lap, stops crying, smiles, grabs my face, and puts his forehead up to mine… I knew right then and there he was telling me thank you. When he moved away from my face, he noticed my scar on my face. I was still recovering from a surgery to remove my melanoma skin cancer. He makes a concerned face, gently touches the scar, and then touches his face where a matching scar would be on his face. I told him “I’m ok..I promise.” He smiles and touches my forehead with his forehead again. After his test, I went to my office and cried tears because it was just such a special moment. THIS was the exact day that I KNEW I would never work with another population. It truly makes me cry seeing this picture because I know just how much it means to me 🥰🥰💕💕
