@alkalineherbshop: Consumer Reports tested 21 popular kids snacks. 14 had harmful contaminants at concerning levels. The main one is acrylamide. It forms when starchy foods are baked or fried at high heat. IARC calls it a probable human carcinogen. Worst for acrylamide: Nature Valley Oats n Honey bars (10.1 micrograms per serving), Lays Classic (7.37), Snyders Mini Pretzels (4.48). Takis Fuego had the highest glycidyl esters, another probable carcinogen per IARC. Annies Cheddar Bunnies, Clif Zbar and Slim Jim were flagged for phthalates, plastic chemicals that can disrupt hormones. Gimme seaweed snacks went over the concern level for cadmium, a heavy metal. There is no federal legal limit for these chemicals in snack food. The FDA only offers voluntary guidance.
