The Nnewi Medical Icon Who Has Served for Nearly a Century As the Ojukwu family marks the 100th birthday of its eldest son, we look at the remarkable life of the surgeon, patriarch and keeper of a legacy who has quietly stood in history's shadow When the name Ojukwu is mentioned, one figure immediately comes to mind: Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the charismatic Biafran warlord whose place in Nigerian history is secured. Yet behind that towering figure stood an elder brother whose own story spans nearly a century of service to Nigeria — in medicine, in family, and in the quiet preservation of a dynasty. His name is Dr Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu MFR Today, September 26, 2026, Dr Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu, MFR, the eldest son of the late Sir Louis Philip Odumegwu Ojukwu, turns 100. It is a milestone that invites reflection not only on a life of extraordinary longevity but on a career that placed competence and humility above acclaim — and on a man who, in his own understated way, helped shape modern Nigerian medicine. Roots in Nnewi Born on September 26, 1926, at Akamili, Umudim, Nnewi, Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu was the first child of Sir Louis Philip Odumegwu Ojukwu of Umudim, Nnewi, and Ogbenyeanu Janet Malize of Ukpor. His early years unfolded in Lagos after the family relocated to the city, settling at 3 Okoya Street. Following his mother's remarriage, the family was blessed with two more children — Priscilla and Hyacinth. Priscilla died in her teenage years, while Hyacinth later became a businessman and remained, throughout his life, a loving and devoted brother to Joseph. King's College and the Making of a Generation Young Joseph attended the prestigious King's College, Lagos, where he distinguished himself academically and rose to become Head Boy — an early signal of the discipline and leadership that would define his life. His time there coincided with a remarkable convergence of history. While he was a senior student, his younger brother Emeka and their cousin Emmanuel joined the school in Class One alongside Alex Ekwueme and others who would later play significant roles in Nigeria's national story. From Lagos, he proceeded to Cambridge University and Guy's Hospital in London, where he qualified as a medical doctor before specialising in surgery. He went on to obtain a Master of Surgery degree after becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) — the beginning of a distinguished surgical career. A Career Dedicated to Healing Upon returning to Nigeria, Dr Ojukwu worked at the University College Hospital (UCH) before becoming a Consultant Surgeon at the General Hospital, Lagos. Then came the Nigerian Civil War — a cataclysm that changed the direction of the Ojukwu family's life and forced their movement to the Eastern Region. Dr Ojukwu continued his medical service in the East, working at the Specialist Hospital in Enugu, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Umuahia, and Emekuku Catholic Hospital. Following the war, the Enugu Specialist Hospital eventually became the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), where he continued his professional contribution to medicine. Affectionately known as "Pa Ojukwu," he was highly regarded by colleagues, patients and all who interacted with him for his competence, dedication, selflessness and humility. His career culminated in his position as a Clinical Professor of Surgery before his retirement in 1987. A National Honour In 1983, in recognition of his contributions to the country, Dr Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by the Federal Government under the administration of President Shehu Shagari. The honour added a national dimension to a career that had already made a significant impact on medical practice and patient care in Nigeria. Family, Faith and a Golden Union Away from medicine, Dr Ojukwu's life was defined by family. In December 1957, he married Maria Ukamaka Aghaji at St Michael's Church, Umudim, Nnewi.
