I was raised by both my parents until I was 15. My mum struggled with alcohol and would sometimes drink heavily, especially after my dad got a job far away from home.
I remember watching my dad beg her many times to stop drinking, but she never listened. Sometimes things became violent, and my dad would beat her. As a young boy, I didn't understand what was really happening. I only saw my mum being hurt, so I hated my dad for it.
Eventually, my mum developed serious liver problems because of her drinking, and she passed away. What made it even harder was that my dad disappeared around that time. He switched off his phone, and we couldn't reach him. We ended up burying my mum without him being there.
At that age, my hatred for my dad became even stronger. But as I grew older, my perspective started to change. I began to understand that things were much more complicated than I had thought as a child. I started to understand the position my dad had been in and how helpless and difficult that situation must have been for him.
Today, I live with my dad, and I love him. I still can't change what happened in the past, and I don't believe everything that happened was right, but growing older has taught me to see things from a different perspective.
Sometimes we judge people based on what we see as children, only to understand their struggles much better when we become adults.
