@0.yoou: In 1912, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole. He arrived on December 14, 1911, after a difficult journey across the ice. He discovered that a British team led by Robert Falcon Scott was also racing to reach the Pole first. Amundsen left a message for Scott before beginning his journey back.
