@dr.g_and_the_sea: E30.Why do open ocean fish often have silvery sides? If you’re a fish with nowhere to hide, covering yourself in tiny mirrors seems like a terrible camouflage strategy. 🐟✨ But out in the open ocean, hiding works very differently. And those brilliant silver sides aren’t nearly as conspicuous as they look in your hand. #silveryfish #fish #openocean #pelagicfish #fishcamouflage #camouflage #animalcamouflage #countershading #guanine #guaninecrystals #biologicalmirrors #reflection #light #optics #animaladaptations #animalphysiology #fishbiology #fishadaptations #predatorprey #marineanimals #marinebiology #marinescience #marineecology #oceanbiology #oceanlife #marinelife #ocean #oceanography #oceanscience #oceanfacts #animalfacts #biologyfacts #sciencefacts #science #sciencetok #learnontiktok #stem #fyp #HowTheOceanReallyWorks

I graduated from college a while ago. one of the most disappointing parts was how much of my time was eaten up by completing a mess of overlapping degree requirements. I always wanted to take classes in marine biology, and never got the chance. content like this fills that little hole in my brain, thanks for making it!

This just makes smoltification even cooler to me considering guanine and hypoxanthine are “by-products” of the process but just so happen to give the fish the perfect camouflage for the ocean! Seems so coincidental but evolution is just amazing like that

Some fish even took this a step further and developed bioluminescence on their stomachs to blend in with the light coming from above, since many predators hunt from below to see them better.
