PhD Industrial Engineering here. Post-doc employment can be challenging, but as a mechanical engineer you are very employable. You just need to be willing to move to where the work is NOW. Also, no one is going to really consider you until you're done done and your degree is confirmed. Lastly, the job market is crap now for EVERYONE. Due to uncertainty from many federal policies, employers have been very hesitant to hire or expand. Don't give up, an opportunity will present itself soon. You're a mechanical engineer! Your skillset is rare and in demand. Learn how to apply AI to ME and you'll be hired immediately!

Criteria 1, apply to profitable, growing manufacturing companies. No 2, entry level position on a mechanical engineering track. No 3, look for positions where you can build skills while showing off you smarts & ambition.

Hi, Photonics PhD here... I went through the same thing. Industry doesnt know what to do with PhDs alot of the time. I essentially started at an entry level job then was able to jump. Also, applying this later in the year is tough because employers dont hire in nov/dev generally for financial reasons. The job market is also trash so the best advice I can offer is work your professional network. Best wishes.

That's what happens when you're professional student. Should've gone to work after your bachelors then school for a masters while you worked. PHD if you want to be a professor, not many companies hiring PHDs if any.

PhD is often for teaching and research so I would look into university and community college engineering teaching jobs for a steady paycheck upon graduation. If you're looking at the private sector, many companies hire PhDs at a short term consulting capacity (1099) but a W-2 job would most likely require a decade or more of parallel industry experience. Also search online for a "HeadHunter". These are staffing agencies that specialize in placing high-skilled candidates to companies hiring VP/CEO, Director or consulting-type positions. And search U.S. government jobs and filter what jobs you can apply to with your PhD.

I do not want to discourage you but it is very difficult finding a job. I had a bachelors degree with 15 years of experience in the semiconductor industry as a process engineer. Layoffs came and it took me two years to find another job. And I had to leave semiconductors and started trying in the medical field. Within two weeks of looking into the medical field I had a job and had five promotions and advancements within the first year. Don’t be afraid to branch out and try new fields.

Don’t cold apply anywhere. Spend your time making connections in the industry, then use them to ensure you pass the initial screens and filters. Source: fuckin’ beats me what works 🤷♂️

Everyone I know on the PhD job market applied to like 200+ jobs. Not sure if there is a cycle to hiring in engineering but for us it starts in October/November so you may be off cycle too

I work in admin in an education policy and research department and we are currently hiring for a new faculty position. We posted to mainly attract applicants who focus in quantitative measures, so very specific. We got over 150 applicants. It is genuinely rough for everyone out there. 😭

Keep your chin up. These are very tough times for folks your age. The economy is struggling and hiring has slowed dramatically. This is a slow hire/no fire situation right now. The best way to get a good opportunity is through a network, professional already working that you know, your parents if they have professional contacts. HR is a screen. If you have a company in mind that might have openings, find someone inside and reach out without your resume and try to develop a relationship. Résumés are done a dozen. Have a good “story” about yourself and how you can benefit the company you want to work for. Make sure to keep yourself busy during tough times. Keep at it and something will break loose eventually. I feel for you, wishing you the best!

Engineering PhD here worked in Academia, private and public. For academia start applying for full and adjunct positions, these are hard fought limited positions and come available during specific times of the year. If you want some income while you apply do some tutoring to undergrads. If you want a post doc, search for fellowships and funding as well as positions, there is nothing more attractive than a partially funded researcher. I'll add comments on this post for my experience with the private sector and public sector.

I think you should focus on defending your dissertation. It's too much stress to do that and be applying to jobs. You can get back to that once you have your PhD.
