but also, if you’re a patient, i know you most likely don’t feel well but if you’re mentally sound and cognitively competent, you’re not going to treat me poorly either. There’s a reason nurses are leaving the bedside and/or pursuing an entirely different career path. We are tired of being abused and not advocated for. There’s a reason a nurse is 20% more like to UA themselves than the general population. A lot of times we haven’t eaten or used the restroom for hours on end in order to meet the demands of our patient load. As a patient, I’m going to show him/her some grace as long as they’re not being blatantly rude. I don’t expect warm and fuzzy but I do expect mutual respect. We expect a nurse to smile after he or she just bagged the body of a child? Or found out his/her own loved one is sick but we can’t abandon our patients to go take care of our child or spouse or parent? Yeahhhh…let’s get real. I don’t expect you to smile, just don’t be rude & make sure I’m getting what I need for treatment and communicate w me.

Sometimes if I’m having a bad day, I will go to the bathroom and just cry and then wipe my tears, splash my face, and put my big smile back on. Making my patients happy is more important to me.
