![If God Really Exists, Why Doesn't He Punish Criminals Immediately? Many wonder why God does not immediately punish wrongdoers. The Quran provides a clear answer: (Quran 16:61) “If Allah were to punish people immediately for their wrongdoing, He would not have left a single living being on earth. But He delays them for an appointed term. And when their time arrives, they cannot delay it for a moment, nor can they advance it.” If Allah SWT were to punish every sinner instantly, human existence itself would have ended at the very beginning. As humans, we are bound to make mistakes, but Allah, in His infinite mercy, grants us time to repent and correct ourselves. He has set a fixed time—the Day of Judgment—when justice will be served. Until then, He allows people to exercise their free will, guiding them through conscience and revelation. However, for the evildoers who die unrepentant, death itself will be a terrifying punishment. Their souls will not be taken with peace but with violence. (Quran 79:1) “By those [angels] who extract (souls) with violence.” On the Day of Judgment, the wicked will find no refuge: (Quran 25:22) “But on the Day they see the angels, there will be no good news for the wicked, who will cry, ‘Keep away! Away from us!’” Allah SWT has given humans free will to choose between right and wrong. He has instilled in us natural instincts—guilt and sorrow—to help us differentiate between the two. Moreover, He has revealed divine scriptures to guide us. Those who deliberately transgress His limits will face the consequences. Even in nature, Allah provides signs. Wild animals hunt and devour their prey without mercy—reminding us that the hereafter is no joke. No excuses will save a person on that Day; this life is merely a test, and trials are inevitable. (Quran 14:42) “Do not think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when their eyes will stare in horror.” Justice may seem delayed, but it is never denied.
