The commenter is judging communication in 2001 through a 2026 lens. We didn’t have instant, reliable access to one another the way we do now. We had cell phones in 2001, but the cell towers and networks were nothing—I mean NOTHING—like they are today, and the networks were almost immediately overwhelmed. We still relied heavily on landlines, especially in offices and for long-distance communication. Between employees and visitors, the Twin Towers combined could have up to 50,000 people in them on any given day. Imagine how many people were trying to reach just ONE of those 50,000 people to make sure they were okay—then multiply that by tens of thousands. Besides, he was triaging…his job was to be quick and efficient. People were coming behind to treat. ♥️

as a person in high school in CT at the time, we all immediately tried to call our parents who were commuters to NYC if we had cell phones and it was a BUSY SIGNAL or just dropped. there was NO communication available even if he could call

I think many people don’t understand the strength it took for that EMT to walk away. I can’t even imagine the trauma and guilt of performing triage during that magnitude of dead and dying inflicts upon a person. Unable to help, unable to comfort, unable to stop because there are dozens and dozens more needing help. It’s awful thing to have to endure.

Also, even if you had a cell, the cell towers went down in New York and the surrounding areas in the aftermath. The chances of a call getting through at all would have been very low. 🥺

I watched a video where he was talking about this woman & he said it took years of therapy to get over this. It broke his heart to have to leave her but he knew he needed to save the lives that he could. He said that her voice haunted him for years & that he can still hear it. I can't imagine his pain & the tough decision he had to make in that moment. May we never know that pain.

I'm also certain that anybody judging anything anybody did on 9/11 either wasn't born yet or they weren't old enough to really remember life then. Like I don't think we even really knew what text messaging was then and not everybody had a phone. There were zero suicides recorded that day because they just chose if they died by jumping or burning to death. There's a video of fire fighters listening to the bodies from inside the lobby of the tower as bodies were hitting the ground and they knew they couldn't save them.
