@thepottymouthguru: Replying to @mamafdarcy Supporting a triggered partner and taking responsibility for their regulation are two very different things. You can slow things down, stay grounded, offer reassurance when it’s appropriate, and recognize when the conversation needs to pause. But eventually they have to learn to notice their own activation, regulate themselves, and come back to the conversation. Otherwise “helping” can quietly turn into doing both people’s emotional work. ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #UNFUCKYOURSELF #THEPOTTYMOUTHGURU #Defensiveness #Overfunctioning #EmotionalRegulation

I was sitting at a family dinner with my spouse tonight and at one point I looked over at him and told him directly that I needed his validation that I had just had a REALLY good idea. My son nodded and said I did but my spouse got up and bolted out of the room. He returned to the table less than a minute later wearing a T shirt that said « I know you are right but at this point I am just trying to make you mad » and he wore it with pride. I never got the validation I needed from him. He chose the perfect moment to pull out a shirt I never knew he bought and put it on rather than making me feel heard and understood.

Where I'm getting stuck with the "pause and come back later" advice is that when we return I am immediately reactivated again, and we are back to where we left off. The act of having a significant conversation is the trigger.

You can support your partner without becoming their emotional support department. 😂 Who else has realized “helping” sometimes meant doing both people’s fucking work? 👀❤️🤟🏻🌿

Wait I can learn to hold two realities at once by increasing my capacity? 🥹 I honestly thought that was a limitation from my neurodivergence, the weaker working memory and autistic brain traits. I can't wait to see how far I can push my limit! If this seems random, I'm extrapolating from when you said the lizard brain kicks in and we lose the ability to hold two realities, it's nice to know I might have some wiggle room at times, particularly in the times where it matters most!

We can certainly create safety and support for someone without taking responsibility for regulating them or doing their emotional work for them. It’s about holding that space. Learning to recognize when we’re too activated to communicate well and knowing when to pause is such an important part of healthy relationships. 😊

I’m exhausted, just hearing all that. No wonder I’m exhausted all the time in this relationship because I’m actually doing all of that all the time.

I spent two years being Head Of Regulation for my partner who refused to do or learn or change anything about it - I just shouldn’t have “damaged” them so that made me responsible to “make an offer”… about feelings that just come up - and also constantly being berated for “being the psychologist” outside of doing the regulation. It was so impossible and so frustrating. I’m so glad I’m with someone who actually likes me and wants me around now 🥹

Yep, that’s me, I can get caught up in the cycle easily. Got it. Regulate myself and stop pursuing.
