@granchiomusic: Georges Bizet was a French composer whose Carmen became one of the most enduring operas in the classical repertoire. The “Habanera” is Carmen’s entrance aria in Act I, immediately introducing her as a woman who sees love as something wild, unpredictable and impossible to control. The melody was adapted from “El Arreglito,” a habanera by Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier, first published in 1863. Bizet initially believed it was a traditional folk song; when he discovered that it had a known composer, he acknowledged the source in the score. He transformed the melody into one of opera’s most recognizable arias, with Carmen singing about love as a force that cannot be tamed.
