@btnewsroom: On Friday, Chileans held a demonstration and vigil in front of the Víctor Jara Stadium, formerly Estadio de Chile, to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the CIA-backed coup against Salvador Allende. The US-backed Pinochet coup against Allende interrupted Chile's "road to socialism," setting the country on a path of economic shock therapy and neoliberalism. The dictatorship used the Estadio de Chile, Chile’s national stadium, as the main detention and torture center in the capital. Over 5,000 people passed through the stadium between November 1973 and July 1974. On September 11, 2003, the stadium was renamed the Victor Jara Stadium after the famous folk singer who was tortured and killed there.
