@mosheh: Before ChatGPT and Claude, the late astrophysicist Stephen Hawking was already sounding the alarm that artificial intelligence could ultimately threaten humanity’s survival. “Once humans develop artificial intelligence, it will take off on its own and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate," Hawking said in a 2014 interview with @rorycellan, then of the @bbc. “Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete and would be superseded.” Hawking, who lived with ALS for decades until he died in 2018, was talking about a new system developed by Intel that he was using to speak. The machine used predictive text technology — an early form of AI — to help Hawking communicate faster, allowing him to use more than 80% fewer characters to convey what he meant. In 2015, Hawking was among several prominent scientists to sign an open letter to the United Nations calling for the international regulation of AI while warning about the dangers of an AI arms race. The renowned astrophysicist continued speaking about AI until his death, writing in his posthumously published book, ‘Brief Answers to the Big Questions,’ about his concerns that AI could produce sophisticated weapons systems "that can choose and eliminate their own targets." The BBC clip has resurfaced in recent days, after AI researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic last week, claiming that AI leaders were “gambling with our lives.” One of Coxon’s former Anthropic colleagues, Evan Hubinger, echoed the concerns, giving AI a greater than 10% chance of killing all humans within the next decade. Anthropic's CEO on Saturday called for international cooperation to establish AI safety standards and slow down the technology’s development. Sources: @bbc, @npr
