Tank of the Day: M48 Patton Named after US General George S. Patton Jr., legendary commander of the US Third Army in Europe during World War II, it was actually the third tank named after “Old Blood and Guts.” The M46 Patton had been introduced as a heavily modified version of the M26 Pershing, itself originally classed as a heavy tank but was re-designated as a medium tank after WWII. The M46 developed into the M47 Patton. The M48 was designed to replace the multitude of tanks still in US service, including the M4 Sherman, M26 Pershing, and the M46 & M47 Pattons. It was a first-generation Main Battle Tank (MBT), designed to fulfil all the roles that previously had been designated to light, medium, and heavy tanks. The MBT concept had also been adopted by the British with the Centurion, and the Soviets with the T-55. It originally sported a 90mm main gun, upped to a 105mm on the M48A5 variant. It had 178mm of armour on the turret front, with 110mm of armour on the upper glacis, and had a maximum speed of 30mph. The M48 Patton saw service in the US Army from 1952-61, and with the US Marine Corps from 1952-70. This included deployment as the primary US tank in Vietnam. It was also the main tank of the US Berlin Brigade during the Berlin crisis of the late-1950s and early-1960s, where at its height the M48s stared off against Soviet T-55s just feet away. Ultimately though, no fighting broke out. It was sold widely abroad, and has seen previous service in West Germany (and Germany following re-unification), Israel, South Korea, Jordan, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Portugal, Pakistan. The MBT variant is still in use today with the armies of Greece, Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Somalia, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey. #m48patton #patton #tank #america #historytok
