Every time you rehearse a thought, worry, catastrophize, replay an argument, you’re not just “feeling stressed.” Instead, you’re strengthening a circuit. Hebb's Law says that neurons that fire together wire together. Under chronic stress, the pathways for rumination and threat-scanning get thicker and faster, while the pathways your prefrontal cortex uses for focus and recall get less traffic and start to weaken. That’s brain fog. The chemical signals get the headlines, but they’re not the whole story, they’re part of what drives the deeper structural change. And structure is what you can actually go after. Your mind built that pattern one repeated thought at a time, which means your mind can build a different one. This is where self-brain surgery comes in. The fourth commandment of self-brain surgery is I must believe that my mind is in charge of my brain. The fifth commandment of self-brain surgery is I must believe that self-brain surgery is not a metaphor, it is the mechanism of transforming my life. Every surgeon operates with intention, not by accident, and so do you. When the fog hits, you don’t just wait for the feeling to pass, you interrupt the circuit. You catch the automatic thought (see II Corinthians 10:5). The third commandment of self-brain surgery is I must believe that most of my automatic thoughts are untrue, so you deliberately rehearse a different pathway on purpose. You preach a verse until your mind rehearses truth instead of noise. Isaiah 26:3: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you.” Do that consistently, day after day, and you are rebuilding the wiring. Friend, brain fog is not who you are. It’s a circuit you built without meaning to, which means it’s a circuit you can rebuild on purpose. Also check with your doctor- this can also come from medical issues! If this helped, share it with someone stuck in the fog, and save it for the next time you need it. And if you want the full surgical playbook, grab my New York Times bestselling book, The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery at the link in my bio. #neuroscience #selfbrainsurgery #neurosurgeon #brainfog
