@goatcult.media: In May 2013, 28-year-old filmmaker and photographer James Cockle entered the water near Carnsew Basin in Hayle, Cornwall. Cockle was an experienced surfer and photographer who had spent years around rough seas, including capturing dramatic images in 2011 of surfers being swept from a sea wall by huge waves. But the water at Hayle became deadly. Cockle was caught in a powerful current and pulled into a whirlpool near a sluice gate. The footage captures his final moments as people nearby realize he’s in trouble and desperately try to help. Emergency crews later recovered his body. It wasn’t Cockle’s first close call with the ocean. In 2008, he had narrowly survived being trapped near a stone pier as a huge wave approached while surfing near Penzance.
