@zoya_letstalkwoc: Often, you’ll see online videos of people saying that women of colour need to be outrageously beautiful in order to gain respect or feed into stereotypes, but let me remind you that this standard is a byproduct of colonialism and racism. Historically and consistently, our bodies have been perceived as sites of f3tish and disgust at the same time. Stereotypes emerged from this perspective that still persist throughout our society in social media and in overall trends. Nonetheless, women of colour do not need to conform to these caricatures in order to receive respect. We aren’t items of fantasy or fiction, and the more you choose to unapologetically take care of yourself to resist these forms of oppression, the more we can deconstruct harmful narratives about our bodies. Enough with the spicy Latina, quiet Asian girlfriend, and hypers3xual black woman tropes.
