english is not the same as asl. asl has its own grammar structure. the message still gets across with PSE, but it’s not the same thing, that’s why there’s a name for it. asl has its own grammar structure because it’s its own language. asl is a visual language, english is a verbal language— that’s not the same language

I can sign so many things and I’m barely passing my ASL college class because I never can put things in the right. Grammatical order and it sucks because I totally know all the vocabulary and I know how to speak to people in ASL actually pretty good given that I’m a beginner. I mean I understand because it’s an ASL class in college but still frustrates me that I’m always losing points because I don’t put things in the correct grammatical order even though all my signs and what I’m saying is correct just not putting it in the right order. When I go to ASL events that are required to go to in the Deaf community, I can carry on pretty basic conversations with no issue and I know I’m not doing things in the correct grammatical order but I love the Deaf community in my area because they will sit and have a whole conversation with me regardless and they don’t correct me or make me feel dumb and it makes me feel really confident and learning ASL!!

It seems to me that learning to communicate before learning the intricacies of grammatical correctness, would be the same as how the hearing learn to communicate before taking a class in English composition. We should first learn to communicate ASL and then refine the characteristics with grammar theory. Who am I?

I am hearing and learned SEE as a child. I was taught it by a man in the deaf community who was a huge part of my life. I was young, so I can't tell you why he used SEE instead of ASL. I assume he was using it to help me learn as a child since it followed English grammar rules. But who knows. While I know SEE is NOT the same, it did birth within me a love for sign language and the deaf community. I have recently started working on learning ASL and appreciate your perspective. ASL is beautiful and it's very on language indeed. And I do believe you need to learn from somebody in the deaf community. But SEE was where I started. 🤷♀️

What’s mind blowing is every human who wants to learn to communicate with the deaf community should be applauded. Who cares what label is attached. Connecting and stepping in to their world is what should be celebrated and embraced.

I am a nurse and I know a lot of ASL signs. But I have no idea of how to sign grammatically correct! But I can get by with my patients! I learned in high school just talking with my friend who was hearing impaired. I just wanted to know how to communicate better with my patients so I tried to teach myself more medical terms. 🫣💕 I’d love to one day be more fluent!

I am not in the community so I don’t have much of a say. However my son isn’t speaking yet. We are teaching him signs how we talk (pse). I see it as a dialect. ASL being “proper” and the others being “southern” or something like that. All still English

I can also say words in incorrect English grammar and be understood by people who speak English but that doesnt mean the grammar rules dont exist.

I barely understand English grammar and knowing the signs is better than not being able to communicate

What do you mean asl has not word order? There can be major misunderstandings if word order is thrown away.

Just because they’re able to understand you doesn’t mean it’s proper.. fruit for thought

Will I be able to understand them? If I sign the signs in the order I speak them, I realize they will understand what I am saying...but will I be able to understand their message if they a using DEAF grammar?

thank you so much for this encouragement!! I want to learn ASL grammar because I don't want to be rude or come off as a jerk to anyone in the D/deaf community, or like I "don't take learning sign seriously". but seeing this relieves me to know that when I do slip up and happen to sign more like English, it's not the end of the world. I'm still learning.

Do you think ASL grammar is changing because more deaf people have cocular implants and so even though sign is their first language and English is their second language do you think it’s changing how ASL is grammatically?

I agree with you.
ASL, Verbal English, written English, it's all the same language in different forms. special labels are simply meant to exclude and gatekeep just like assigning status to specific dialects of verbally spoken English. the times will catch up eventually but thank you for being a voice for this issue, much love ❤️❤️

I heard simmcomming was discouraged in the ASL community, is that true? If so, if you’re learning ASL and you use the grammar you learned English with will others who use the correct grammar (If there is a such thing as correct grammar)
