@kirrilyr: Disappointed & disgusted? Yes. Surprised? Not even a little bit. Now let set the record straight. Sydney Sweeney is not the problem. This ad is not the problem. They are small cogs in a much bigger issue and that’s young girls and women fighting to be take seriously in sport, being respected in sport and for our safety in sport and life. Women are competitive. Women are dedicated. Women are strong. And none of that should EVER be reduced to something as trivial as our appearance. Sport is about performance. It’s about hard work, discipline, teamwork, resilience and pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. It’s about the hours nobody sees. The early mornings. The sacrifices. The setbacks. The determination to keep showing up. Young girls deserve to grow up seeing women celebrated for what their bodies can DO, not judged or sexualised for how their bodies look. We should be encouraging girls to take up space in sport — not teaching them that their appearance is part of their performance. Because women belong in sport. Women belong in competitive spaces. Women deserve to feel safe in those spaces. And we shouldn’t have to choose between being taken seriously as an athlete and being comfortable in our own skin. Our bodies are not the problem.
