To explain it a bit better- the axolotl’s you think of in the pet trade are the juvenile stage of Tiger Salamanders. They can live their entire life in the juvenile stage and can reproduce. They are Tiger Salamanders and that juvenile stage is called an “axolotl”. Because they can breed in this stage, many people never see them go through metamorphosis. They don’t need to and live longer in their juvenile phase. Metamorphosis is triggered from different factors. To my knowledge all salamander species have a juvenile stage as an Axolotl- just the one that ms popular right now is the Tiger Salamander Axolotl

this is absolutely wild! I had no idea this was possible. my seven year old loves these guys. but we've been able to talk and learn about them through these videos and he's mind blown. I've always discribed them as baby salamaders that decided to stop growing up cuz being a teenager was cool. we have lots of salamanders here where we live. but seeing one grow is so cool
