i think its also because to Hal, being green lantern is the only thing he has, and he's worried that without the ring he'll have no identity or sense of self. His mansion is beautiful and grandiose but inside its completely empty and bare, kind of symbolizing Hal being the GL in a way. I think he's tied his sense of self worth to being the GL.

The story hasn’t told us what changed Hal between 2006 and 2016. He clearly doesn’t trust the Guardians. He’s paranoid, but they are, in fact, out to get him. He barely knows John, and who would be happy training their replacement? The last three episodes have work to do to make this all make sense.

Getting the ring was probably the worst thing that happened to Hal he gave everything to the core for decades and after all that he gets replaced and he's old now he's essentially dedicated everything to the ring and he had nothing and I mean nothing at all a big empty house and no family and just a carnivorous plant to keep him company he's given everything to the ring and the ring is the only thing he has left

Love this theory. It could also lead into parallax honesty. Him chasing a past that he’s lost and it leads him to taking more and more power. Not too big on theories just a thought

Hal does say that being a Green Lantern is a terribly lonely f**king job. He has no one. I think you're right that Hal's whole identity is wrapped up in being a Green Lantern. People care about the Green Lantern. Nobody cares about Hal Jordan. He's not holding onto power. He's holding onto existing.

I think even Hal knows he’s not a bad lantern idk why everyone is assuming this. Just because he wants to keep his ring

i think he's also trying to keep the memory of happier times alive by not backing up his consciousness

I think he wants to save John from it and sees wearing the ring as a suffering he deserves not a reward

There seems to be a lot of misdirection. The way it was written asks more questions of the events. The team behind Lanterns understood the relevance of fan theories, and hype.

this ring, this piece of Sh#t only was brought me pain and misery, it started great having power and being a hero but each time I had to give and give until I have nothing left except this ring.

The reason is he has nothing else. His whole identity is “I’m the green lantern”

I think its much simpler than that. Hal's old and lonely. He's pushed everyone close to him away for the sake of the job so he doesn't lose people he's attached to. The ring is all he has left.

I know lots of people are thinking about the parallax theory but I’m really hoping it’s just like the rebirth comics and he comes across the manhunter armour and finds himself in that moment, trying to help without any ring or powers and then managing to absorb willpower from the armour and create a new ring

I feel like its also because Hal has given up alot he probably gave up Carol, his friends and loved ones so if he loses his ring then to him itll feel like he gave it all up for nothing

It’s a test of who’s will to be a green lantern is stronger. Somone who is experienced in it, or one nurtured for it. They’re both deserving of the same ring and by all accounts deserve their own lantern

When the ring asked Hal, Hal wasn’t without fear, he was without any thing to care about. It was literally what he said on TV. After Hal got the ring, he got Sinestro, a friend, a family. After Sinestro, Hal only had the ring.

John grandized him being obsessed with not loosing the ring Hal was chosen by the ring so having a trainee like this for sure is suspicious asf after his experience with sinestro Hal knows he’s done this job for so long and he knows the best way to handle it even though he doesn’t really

He’s obsessed because he’s been doing it for so long. It’s his sense of purpose it’s like a person that retires they fear not having anything do after devoting so much time to the work. In comics Hal is a loser in his real life🥲

if we think about what is this version of Hal doing if he’s not being GL bro literally has no life outside of the ring in this show
