And maybe that helps explain why anti-intellectualism has become so common in certain Christian movements. Think about what education teaches you to do: Question authority. Demand evidence. Challenge your own assumptions. Change your mind when the evidence changes. Now compare that with fundamentalism: The Bible cannot be wrong. Faith is a virtue. Doubt can be dangerous. If science contradicts scripture, distrust the science. That’s why evolution becomes an enemy. That’s why universities become “liberal indoctrination.” That’s why scientists are accused of having an agenda. This doesn't mean Christians are stupid. Plenty of brilliant scientists and scholars are Christians. The problem is a religious system that tells you the answer BEFORE you're allowed to investigate the question. Because once people learn to ask— “What evidence would actually convince me that I’m wrong?” —certainty becomes a lot harder to protect. Maybe education isn't teaching people to become atheists.
